Bulky regression suites can be a significant challenge in QA life cycle, as they can slow down the overall testing process, increase costs, and hinder productivity. Here are some common problems associated with bulky regression suites:
- Incrementally extended test execution cycles
- Increased effort and cost
- Reduced leverage
- Reduced clarity on coverage
- Difficulty in Identifying Critical Issues
- Increased cost of quality
There are multiple reasons, which lead to bulky regression suits.
- Continuous addition of test cases in the existing suite
- Duplicate test cases
- Obsolete test cases are not removed from the suite
- Lack of traceability with requirements
To solve these problems, regression suites to be optimized, which is a Continuous process that includes Analysis, Prioritization, Optimization & Maintenance of the Regression Test Suite. This process includes:
- Preparation of Business Process Decomposition Matrix and mapping the test cases to it
- Test Suite Rationalization
- Test Case Prioritization
- Impact Analysis
To rationalize regression test suites, test cases to be reviewed based on following criteria:
- Test cases are business critical
- Frequently executed
- Not duplicate
- They are correct and complete in nature
- Their impact on current release
By addressing these issues systematically, organizations can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their regression testing efforts.
Benefits:
- Reduced Execution Cycle Time
- Increased Leverage
- Reduced Effort & Cost
- More Clarity on Coverage
- Increase in RoI
